Frequently asked questions

What is the current UK VAT rate? +

Most things are charged at 20%, the standard rate. A smaller group gets the reduced rate of 5%, including home energy and children's car seats. Some things are zero-rated at 0%, including most food, books, newspapers and children's clothes.

How do I calculate VAT on a price? +

To add VAT, multiply the price by the rate and add that on. For example, £100 x 20% = £20 of VAT, so the total comes to £120. To remove VAT from a price that already includes it, divide by 1 plus the rate as a decimal. £120 divided by 1.20 gives you £100.

How do I work out VAT backwards from a total price? +

Divide the total (the price including VAT) by 1.20 for standard-rated goods. That gives you the price before VAT. Subtract that from the total to see the VAT itself. Our reverse VAT calculator does this for you automatically.

Do I need to register for VAT? +

You have to register once your taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period, or if you expect to cross that figure in the next 30 days alone. You can also register early, before you reach the threshold, if you want to.

Is this VAT calculator accurate? +

Yes. It uses the same formulas HMRC expects, and rounds every result to the nearest penny. That said, for anything you're submitting to HMRC, like a VAT return, it's worth double-checking against your accounting software or an accountant.
